Type 1 diabetes can begin at any age, but usually begins in children or young adults. Type 1 diabetes is when the pancreas makes little or no insulin. This is caused by an immune response. People with Type 1 diabetes typically need to take insulin shots, use an insulin inhaler or be on an insulin pump.

You may have heard this type of diabetes referred to as “insulin-dependent diabetes” or “juvenile-onset diabetes,” but Type 1 diabetes is now the most commonly used name in the medical community.
